A great songwriter is many things at the same time. One of those things is being a poet. We think of music as a great unknown, the mystical part of a song. In our daily lives we listen to music but we do not create music. Yet we use words constantly, sometimes wisely and sometimes crudely, yet everything we say is some form of poetry(I have been told that Nicaragua is a nation of poets where people get together to "talk poetically"). I sometimes hear a GP line and just marvel at how perfect it is, even a line I've heard literally a thousand times. While I think of a stream of conciousness song like She Wants So Many Things as pure poetry, there are so many songs which express a thought simply and perfectly. The most recent of which I can think of is Head on Straight, but my all time favorite has to be Worthy of Your Love.

If I had what I haven't got, a second chance a second shot...I'd be something that I'm not, I'd be worthy of your love

agreed -- and the thoughts expressed in that song are far from simple, yet they are expressed simply.
